ACTION PISTOL FALLING PLATES
Description of the course of fire:
We hold fun matches every Saturday, unless inclement weather, from around the first of April until the point where it gets too cold in December. Matches start promptly at 9:00 a.m. and last until the final shooter completes the match, usually done in about two hours. We emphasize firearms safety and precede each match with a reminder talk/demonstration. Registration is prior to 9:00 a.m., so it is important to get there early enough to register and set up. You will need at least 96 rounds of ammunition for each match entry.
You can choose to shoot at 10 yards only or at four distances: 10 yds., 15 yds., 20 yds., and 25 yds., in that order. There are twenty-four plates to be shot at each distance (half of them round and half square). There is a cylinder or magazine change required after every six shots, so you need four magazines for semi-automatics or at least three speedloaders for revolvers. There will be no more than six rounds in the firearm at any time. It is a speed and accuracy challenge, with a timer starting the shooter and timing the shots. Each missed plate costs the shooter 3 seconds. Low scores are the goal. Every registered shooter fires the 24 round stage 4 times. You may enter more than one gun, if the Match director agrees, this usually depends on the number of entries. We encourage non-Club members to join in.
Rules:
1. NEVER cover people with your weapon when handling.
(Regardless of weapon state be aware of your muzzle
and keep it pointed in a safe direction at all times.)
2. Absolutely NO loaded firearms behind the firing line.
3. Load ONLY when instructed to by the range master.
4. Only 6 rounds allowed per magazine. (24 total in 4 mags)
5. Wear eye and ear protection at all times on the range.
Procedure:
Approach the firing line and wait on the mat when it is your turn. When the line is safe the range master will instruct you to load and make ready. Load your weapon and make safe. Apply the safety or decocker if it is a semiauto. Place your weapon in your holster and assume the surrender position (wrists above your shoulders). The range master will then say “shooter ready, stand by” and reset the timer. An audible beep from the timer will signal you to commence fire. Fire all 24 rounds at the plates, each miss will add a penalty of 3 seconds to your total time. After your last shot show the range master your empty cylinder or chamber by holding the slide rearward. The range master will say “all clear”. Point your weapon down range, release the slide and drop the hammer. The range master will then call “range is safe”.
Each year, normally in September, we hold the Dave Schneider Memorial Championship, in honor of one of our deceased experts. This event draws lots of entries and families, since we conclude the match with a barbecue on the range and have awards. Check the Club calendar for the scheduled date.
